beautiful woman on the street

You likely know the importance of protecting your skin from the sun when you鈥檙e out enjoying the summer weather. But what about your hair? Yes, your locks need some summer love too. Here are five summer care tips to protect your hair from the heat, sun and chlorine all season.

  1. Start the summer with a trim

The first step to keeping your hair healthy all summer long is to start off the season with strong strands that are free of split ends. However, don鈥檛 be surprised if you need another trim before the fall. Hair tends to grow faster in the summer because more strands are in their growing stage than during the cooler months.

  1. Shield your hair from the sun

The sun鈥檚 harsh rays can dry out your locks and quickly fade colour-treated hair. Make a habit of applying UV-protection products, such as a spray or leave-in conditioner, every morning. On days when you plan to spend a lot of time in the sun, be sure to wear a wide-brimmed hat. This will shield your hair from the sun completely and provide additional protection for your face, ears and neck.

  1. Wet your hair before swimming

Both chlorine and salt water can wreak havoc on your hair. The only way to avoid dried ends and tangled hair is to keep your head out of the water entirely. However, there are ways to minimize the mess if you want to take a dip. If you soak your hair in fresh water before you go swimming, the strands won鈥檛 be able to absorb as much of the offending water.

  1. Avoid styling tools

At least once or twice a week during the summer, give your hair a break from heat-styling tools such as blow dryers, flat irons and curlers. For an effortless style, wash your hair at night, separate it into two sections and braid both sides. When you wake up, you鈥檒l have perfect waves without the heat.

  1. Don鈥檛 shampoo too often

While your hair might feel dirtier during the summer than other times of the year, it鈥檚 best not to shampoo more than once every two days. If necessary, refresh your hair with dry shampoo or simply pull it back into a sleek ponytail.

There are so many shampoos out there that choosing the right one for your hair can be confusing. Do you need the expensive one from the salon or is one from the drugstore okay? Here鈥檚 everything you need to know to make a decision.

Silicones, sulfates and parabens

Silicone-, sulfate- and paraben-free have become buzzwords in the beauty industry lately, but it鈥檚 not clear to everyone what these ingredients are and why they should be avoided.

  • Silicone is added to shampoo to make the hair shiny and smooth, essentially coating it in a waterproof layer that stops moisture from getting in or out. While this isn鈥檛 bad in itself, many silicone products will create a buildup over time. This can make your hair look flat, lifeless and dirty, encouraging you to wash and style it more often, which can lead to damage.

Look at the ingredient list on your shampoo bottle. If there are ingredients ending with 鈥渃one,鈥 there are silicones in the product. However, water soluble silicones like cyclomethicone offer the benefits of silicone without creating buildup.

  • Sulfates are cleansing agents that are found in household cleaners, detergents of all kinds and shampoo. They can strip oil from the hair, making it dry and brittle over time. Furthermore, if you colour your hair, sulfates can remove pigments from your locks, making your colour fade quickly.

  • Parabens are preservatives that are used in many different products. While claims that parabens cause cancer haven鈥檛 been proven, parabens can get into your bloodstream, where it鈥檚 thought they can disrupt your hormones. Parabens are clearly listed in ingredient lists, making them easy to spot.

Professional vs. drug store brands

While it鈥檚 true that most professional-grade brands contain ingredients that are better for your hair, many still contain the stuff you may want to avoid. Similarly, there are some pharmacy products that are great for your hair. Your best bet is to look at the ingredient list and choose one that doesn鈥檛 contain the ingredients you want to avoid.

Keep in mind that, in general, salon products contain fewer fillers and less water than drugstore brands, making them much more concentrated. This means that you need significantly less shampoo to wash your hair, making the bottle last a lot longer than you鈥檇 expect.

Woman in bathroom using a blow-dryer

Have you ever wondered why your hair doesn鈥檛 look as good when you do it at home as it does when you have it professionally styled? You may be making one of these six common haircare mistakes.

  1. Shampooing too often. Your hair doesn鈥檛 need to be washed every day. In fact, frequent shampooing can strip your scalp of its natural oils, making your hair dry. Try to wash every two or three days instead. Use a dry shampoo on non-wash days if you feel like you need a refresh.

  1. Not conditioning properly. Conditioner is an absolute must for keeping your hair hydrated and healthy. Squeeze out excess water before conditioning, use the right amount for your hair鈥檚 length (a dollop about the size of a quarter for short hair and about the size of a toonie for long or thick hair) and apply it to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair, avoiding the roots.

  1. Using the wrong towel. When they get out of the shower, most people rub their hair with an ordinary bath towel to dry it. Unfortunately, the loops on a regular terrycloth towel act like Velcro on the hair, making it frizzy. Instead, use a cotton t-shirt or a microfibre towel to gently squeeze water out of the hair.

  1. Not protecting your hair. If you use hot tools to style your hair, it鈥檚 imperative that you use a heat protector on your hair. This provides a barrier between the hair and the heat, making it less prone to damage.

  1. Using styling tools on the hottest setting. The highest heat settings on your blow dryer, flat iron or other styling tool can burn and break your hair if you鈥檙e not careful. Instead, use the lowest setting to avoid damaging your hair.

  1. Not getting regular trims. While the idea that trimming your hair will make it grow longer is a myth, it鈥檚 still important. If you go too long without a trim, the ends may become so damaged that you need to cut off more hair than you want in order to make it healthy again.

Beautiful young caucasian girl with curly hair outdoors

Looking after naturally curly hair often feels like having a second full-time job. It鈥檚 dry. It gets tangled. And oh, did we mention the frizz factor? If you need some help in keeping your curls looking smooth, bouncy and well-nourished, try these hair care tricks from 91自拍, your local cosmetology experts.

Choose your shampoo carefully

You need a shampoo that鈥檚 designed to nourish your hair and won鈥檛 increase its natural dryness. The trick is to stay away from shampoos with sulfates and alcohols in them and opt instead for a mild product with plenty of rejuvenating oils that鈥檚 designed for curly hair.

Follow a pre-shampoo regimen

If you have naturally curly hair, you know that getting enough moisture into your locks is often a struggle. To help protect your hair, we suggest following a pre-shampoo regimen.

Instead of hopping right into the shower, work a conditioner through your dry hair to moisturize it and remove any knots. Then, leave in the product for 10 to 20 minutes to allow it to absorb.

Now, you鈥檙e ready to shampoo your hair鈥攁nd we promise the detangling process post-wash will be a lot easier!

Never use a towel to dry your curls

Your everyday bath towel is too rough on delicate curls. In fact, drying your curls with a towel can increase frizziness. As an alterative, use a cotton T-shirt to squeeze out the water from your hair as gently as possible. Afterwards, apply a curl activating cream and let your curls dry naturally without touching or playing with them.

Learn how to use a diffuser properly

Let鈥檚 say it鈥檚 the middle of winter, or you鈥檙e heading out to an event, and you don鈥檛 have time to let your curls air dry. In these instances, a diffuser is a must-have. Blow-drying your hair without one is going to cause an explosion of frizz, which you obviously do not want.

That being said, using a diffuser properly is a learned skill. We recommend flipping your hair upside-down and diffusing at the roots to remove the access water. Medium heat and power is advised to avoid damaging your curls.

Beautiful young woman with dyed hair

From cotton candy pink to icy blue, bright hair colours are all the rage. While this trend isn鈥檛 at risk of fading anytime soon, your hair colour could be if you don鈥檛 know how to maintain it. To learn the secrets of caring for dyed hair, here are some tips from the 91自拍, your local cosmetology experts.

Invest in high-quality shampoo and conditioner

Before colouring your hair, drugstore shampoo and conditioner might have been your go-to products. However, these items typically contain sodium laureth sulfate, which is harsh on hair, stripping it of both its natural oils and freshly dyed colour.

So, before washing your new hair, you need to go shopping for high-quality, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Ask your hair stylist if they have any recommendations.

Delay shampooing for three days

To best preserve your new colour, we recommend waiting a full 72 hours before washing your hair. This is because when hair is first dyed, the cuticle layer opens up, allowing the colour to permeate the hair shaft. This cuticle layer then takes about three days to close up again, meaning the dye is vulnerable to washing out if you shampoo and rinse your hair too soon.

Never wash your coloured hair with hot water

Who doesn鈥檛 enjoy a hot shower to start the day? Well, your brightly coloured hair, that鈥檚 who. Indeed, hot water opens up your hair cuticles, allowing more of the dye to simply wash down the drain.

To prevent this, we suggest shampooing and conditioning your hair with warm water, thus allowing the products to work while lowering the risk of colour fade. Then, rinse with cold water to seal in your hair colour.

Make dry shampoo your new BFF

Washing brightly coloured hair every day is a big no-no. After all, every time you shampoo, you鈥檙e loosening the dye from your locks. Most hair colourists will tell you to only wash your hair two or three times a week.

In between washes, using dry shampoo can keep your hair looking clean, voluminous and grease-free. It鈥檚 truly the secret weapon in the fight against colour loss. But make sure that you pick a dry shampoo that鈥檚 safe for coloured hair!

Hair acessory

Whether you want to make a statement, or simply want the hair out of your face, hair accessories provide the perfect tool for clean, chic, covet-worthy tresses.

Accessories keep your hair looking up-to-date from work to school to home and everywhere in between.

These hair accessories will never go out of style, so feel free to add them to your new look.

Hair Ties

While hair ties make ponytails possible, ponytails make life better. Easy-to-do hair ties and easy-to-style ponytails may seem basic, but if you wear it with confidence and class, your 鈥榙o is sure to stand out.

Everyone from tennis players and high school teachers to royals and celebrities know how to rock a ponytail鈥攜ou can, too. In the 1950s, a bare-faced Audrey Hepburn transformed the basic hair-tied ponytail from a drag to a dream. Decades later, powerful figures like Meryl Streep and Hilary Clinton made the ponytail seem anything but basic.

If you鈥檙e still wondering if the ponytail has gone out of style, consider this: Rihanna, one of the most fashion-forward women today, wears her ponytails high and proud. If she can do it, you can, too. All you need to pull it off is a good old-fashioned hair tie.

Hats

Despite what you may think, hats are the perfect poolside, shore-side, anywhere-side accessories. Whether you鈥檙e having a bad hair day, or want to top off your look with a boater or cap, you can never go wrong with a hat.

  • Baseball caps: fun and flirty, baseball caps let any girl show off an athletic side while still looking stylish. Bonus? You can even wear it backwards.
  • Bucket hats: classic and casual, bucket hats are making a definite comeback.
  • Boaters: fashionable and fun, boaters are for the free-spirited 鈥渋t鈥 girls (think Carrie Bradshaw).
  • Panama hats: easy and breezy, panama hats channel the perfect amount of professional chicness. If that鈥檚 not enough to convince you, think back to when Robert Redford donned one as Jay Gatsby. Swoon.
  • Wide-brimmed fedoras: stylish and sophisticated, fedoras are perfect for formal and casual occasions.
  • Sun hats: light and loose, sun hats add style while eliminating sun鈥檚 rays.

Whether you choose a baseball cap or wide-brimmed fedora, make sure whatever hat you wear is the stand-out accessory of your outfit.

Headbands

It doesn鈥檛 matter if you have long tresses or a short pixie, headbands never go out of style. Here鈥檚 how you can accessorize your mane without making a fuss:

  • Pixie: Choose a slim, flat headband that doesn鈥檛 create too much drama or too many layers. You can never go wrong with neutral-toned headbands in shades like ivory, silver, or gold.
  • Chin-length: Those with chin-length hair shouldn鈥檛 be afraid of choosing a bold headband. Whether it is coloured or jewelled, the headband you choose should replace loud earring and necklaces altogether.
  • Long tresses: If you have long tresses, keep your look low-key. Don鈥檛 use floppy or oversized headbands鈥攕omething more subtle and stretchy usually looks better.
  • Updo: When it comes to updos, you already have a lot going on in the hair department. Consider choosing and using a simple, sleek headband to add some easy, hassle-free fun.

Head Wraps & Hair Scarves

Whether you have thick, thin, long, or short hair, head wraps look good on everyone. Headwraps and hair scarves come in versatile fabrics and can be styled in many different ways:

  • Tied up
  • Tied down
  • Knotted
  • Braided
  • Bun cover
  • Turban-esque

If you鈥檝e got the confidence, you can rock whatever head wrap or hair scarf that suits your stylish fancy.

Barrettes

There鈥檚 no ifs, and, or buts about it, barrettes are chic. You can use a barrette for preppy ponies, basic updos, and classic knots. Whether you want to keep your hair all up or half down, barrettes are the perfect accessory: they are strong enough to hold all of your hair and trendy enough to make any hairdo look effortless.

Bobby Pins

Bobby pins come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and colours. Although these fun accessories can glam hair up or tone hair down, it all depends on where you place them. Some people use bobby pins to create intricate, Victorian-inspired hairdos while others use them to keep the bangs (fringe) off their face.

It鈥檚 up to you to take a risk and try bobby pins in a different area.听Don’t be afraid to mix and match styles, too鈥攜ou never know what unique style you might create.

Whether you choose to wear hair ties, hats, headbands, wraps, scarves, barrettes, or bobby pins, pick the style and accessory that is right for your look and occasion. It doesn鈥檛 take much to dress up your tresses, it all comes down to how confident you feel wearing them. Don鈥檛 be afraid to stand out and try something you鈥檝e never donned before鈥攆ind a hairpiece that suits your style and your face.

Do you remember when Taylor Swift had long, enviable waves? Do you want to wear your hair in soft, wavy curls, but don鈥檛 know how to achieve it? You鈥檙e in luck, because with the right hair length and a one-inch curling iron, this style is easy to create at home. You can look like you went to the hairstylist without leaving home by following these tips from the experts at our hairdressing school in Vaughn.

Get the length

Short, wavy hair may be trendy right now, but long hair will always be in style. Extensions are a good way to fake having the long hair you dream of. If you鈥檙e waiting for your shoulder-length hair to grow out, this is a good option for you.

While there are many different types of extensions, the easiest to work with are clip-in extensions made from human hair. These extensions are more affordable than semi-permanent types that require you sit in your hairdresser鈥檚 chair for hours. Clip-ins can be removed after a night out, and clipped back in the next time you want long, luxurious hair.

Get the curls

Now that you鈥檝e got the length, start curling your hair. Make sure your hair is clean and completely dry, and follow these steps for enviable curls.

  • Spray your hair with a heat-protecting product like to avoid damaging your hair.
  • Curl one-inch sections of hair, directing them away from your face. Remember that bigger sections of hair equal looser curls, so you can experiment until you find the style you like best.
  • Drop each curl from the iron, but don鈥檛 touch it until you鈥檙e done. Mist each curl with a bit of hairspray before moving on to the next curl.
  • Comb your hair gently with your fingers to loosen up any curls that are too tight.
  • One last shot of hairspray, and you鈥檙e ready for a night on the town!

If you鈥檙e not sure that you can do this on your own, book an appointment at one of our salons. Our students are extensively trained and can give you tips for doing your hair at home.

If you dream of entering the exciting world of hairdressing, and you鈥檙e looking for beauty schools in Bolton, one of the industry鈥檚 most trusted schools in Ontario is just a half hour away in Vaughn. Contact 91自拍 today to learn more about our hairdressing programs.

At 91自拍, we鈥檙e committed to promoting safe and professional hair removal techniques and treatments. Professional hair removal, done by an expert with medical aesthetic training from a beauty school in Toronto, Ontario won鈥檛 leave you with stubble and ingrown hairs, like shaving would. It will leave your skin smooth for longer than any conventional method. Here are five things you should know about hair removal before scheduling one for yourself:

  1. Laser hair removal can take up to two weeks to take effect

Both electrolysis and laser hair removal go straight to the follicle, or the root, of your hair to get rid of it. Because it doesn鈥檛 just remove the hair itself, it may take a few days or even a couple of weeks after the treatment for it to fully eliminate the root of the issue.

  1. It does cause a little irritation

Just as it doesn鈥檛 work immediately, it also isn鈥檛 entirely painless. Although it isn鈥檛 severe at all, these procedures are a little tough on your skin. You can expect some irritation after a visit.

  1. Qualified and experienced estheticians matter

Be sure to do a background check on any clinic or particular esthetician you get a hair removal procedure from. It鈥檚 safest to only get medical procedures done by experts who are properly qualified by a beauty school in Ontario.

  1. Shave before your appointment

For the procedure to work best, you should shave the area of skin that will be undergoing the procedure first. Be sure not to wax it, however, as that might affect the follicle that the laser is attempting to eliminate. Similarly, don鈥檛 shave for at least a few days after your procedure. You need to give your skin a little time to recover.

  1. Stay away from the sun, before and after your appointment

Skin colour can help or prevent some kinds of laser removal treatment from working. If your colour changes from tanning, it might affect your treatment. You should consult your laser hair removal specialist before undergoing any treatment to find out which procedure will work best for your skin.

At 91自拍, we offer many options for beauty, hairdressing, or medical aesthetic training in Toronto, Durham, Newmarket, Ontario, , and beyond. If you鈥檝e ever wondered what esthetician courses are like, make an appointment to tour one of our cosmetology colleges in Toronto, Newmarket or Durham. Whether you鈥檙e doing it by yourself or having it done by a trained professional, colouring your hair is a fun way to revitalize your look and keep you feeling good. But if you want to keep your hair vibrant and bright, how often do you need to colour it? At 91自拍, we鈥檙e committed to educating our students about the ins and outs of hairstyling, hair colouring and makeup artistry at our school in Mississauga or Vaughan, Ontario. Let our team of experts give you a few tips on how often you should colour your hair.

Why do you want to re-colour your hair?

There are a multitude of reasons why you might want to re-colour your hair. As we said before, maybe you鈥檙e simply looking for a new look to keep you feeling fresh and stylish. For many people, however, hair colour is far more than a simple fashion statement. When you start getting on in years, your hair colour is one of the first things to go. If you want to keep a young look, it鈥檚 important to consistently dye your hair to keep yourself from going gray. Because you need to do it so often, you have to know exactly how often you can re-colour while still keeping your hair healthy. Hair dyes are full of chemicals that can be damaging when overused, so be sure to keep with the instructions and don鈥檛 overdo it. Even if you simply want to correct a monumental mistake that was made in a previous hairstyling tragedy, you need to respect these guidelines or risk doing serious, irreversible damage to your hair.

How long should you wait between sessions?

Any chemical treatment applied to your hair will cause damage to some extent. If you don鈥檛 colour your hair very often, the absolute least amount of time you should wait before having it redone is four weeks. This will give your hair time to recover before taking another chemical beating. If you do it more frequently (like when trying to maintain a specific colour), we recommend you wait six to seven weeks before doing it again. The longer you wait, the less likely you鈥檒l be to cause any permanent damage to your hair.

If you鈥檙e looking for hairdressing or esthetician schools in Mississauga, Ontario, give us a call at 91自拍. We offer our students some of the best education in all of Canada. For more information regarding enrolment and programs we offer, visit us here.

  • Platinum blonde

Whether it鈥檚 a softer, surfer streaked blonde or a bolder, totally blonde, pixie-cut statement, many fashion-forward stars have been choosing to dye their hair blonde. You can expect everyone else to pick up on the trend.

  • Natural colour

For those not wanting to go blonde, many stars are also starting to embrace their natural hair colour. If you want to get back to basics, a loose, curly or wavy hairstyle that shows off your own colour is getting more and more popular.

  • Creative ombr茅

The ombr茅 isn鈥檛 just about blond tips anymore. Whether you鈥檇 like to have shades of a wild pink or just blend your natural black hair into a chocolate brown, an ombr茅 can add interest to any look.

For men

2017 is all about taking classic, masculine looks and giving them a modern interpretation.

  • Fade

Although beards are back in style, that doesn鈥檛 mean men can鈥檛 have a clean, modern look. Fades work for almost everyone and can be done with long or short hair.

  • Man bun

It looks like the man bun is here to stay. This look can be worn in the back or on higher, as a top knot. It works best with wavy or curly hair but can be modified to fit any style.

  • Pompadour

This look is centuries old but was brought into the modern era by the King himself, Elvis Presley. Over the years, beauticians have created so many variations to this look that it can look either retro or modern depending on how you style it.
