Ingrown hairs, or those that don鈥檛 erupt through the skin, can be uncomfortable. Here鈥檚 what you should know about treating and preventing them.

Causes

Ingrown hairs are often caused by shaving with a blunt razor. This is because a dull blade can rip your hair instead of cutting it at the root. The resulting jagged ends are likely to grow in irregularly.

Pulling your skin taught when you shave can also cause this problem because your hair may get caught beneath the surface of your skin when you let go.

Even if you wax instead of shave, you may still get ingrown hairs. This can happen if the hair breaks instead of being pulled from the follicle. Your hair is more likely to break when you wax if you don鈥檛 moisturize and exfoliate your skin beforehand.

Additionally, people with naturally curly or coarse hair are more likely to experience this problem than those with fair, straight hair. Curls can change the hair鈥檚 direction and coarse hair can pierce your skin more easily.

Treatment

Most ingrown hairs resolve themselves relatively quickly, but some can become infected if they鈥檙e aggravated. If you have an ingrown hair:

  • Avoid shaving or waxing the area until it鈥檚 healed.

  • Exfoliate to remove dead skin cells and dirt from the follicle. This will encourage the hair to grow in properly.

  • Try to remove it with sterilized tweezers, but only if it鈥檚 visible through the skin. Before you do this, clean the area thoroughly and press a warm washcloth against your skin to loosen the follicle.

Prevention

There are several measures you can take to prevent ingrown hairs from forming. Depending on your method of hair removal, it may be a good idea to:

  • Moisturize daily to reduce the risk of breakage.

  • Switch to a safety razor with a single, sharp blade to ensure your hair is cut cleanly and at the root.

  • Shave hairs in the direction that they naturally grow.

  • Exfoliate regularly, especially before waxing.

  • Wear loose-fitting clothing for the first 24 hours after waxing.

  • Try laser hair removal or electrolysis to prevent regrowth.

winter skincare

From cotton candy pink to icy blue, bright hair colours are all the rage. While this trend isn鈥檛 at risk of fading anytime soon, your hair colour could be if you don鈥檛 know how to maintain it. To learn the secrets of caring for dyed hair, here are some tips from the 91自拍, your local cosmetology experts.

Invest in high-quality shampoo and conditioner

Before colouring your hair, drugstore shampoo and conditioner might have been your go-to products. However, these items typically contain sodium laureth sulfate, which is harsh on hair, stripping it of both its natural oils and freshly dyed colour.

So, before washing your new hair, you need to go shopping for high-quality, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Ask your hair stylist if they have any recommendations.

Delay shampooing for three days

To best preserve your new colour, we recommend waiting a full 72 hours before washing your hair. This is because when hair is first dyed, the cuticle layer opens up, allowing the colour to permeate the hair shaft. This cuticle layer then takes about three days to close up again, meaning the dye is vulnerable to washing out if you shampoo and rinse your hair too soon.

Never wash your coloured hair with hot water

Who doesn鈥檛 enjoy a hot shower to start the day? Well, your brightly coloured hair, that鈥檚 who. Indeed, hot water opens up your hair cuticles, allowing more of the dye to simply wash down the drain.

To prevent this, we suggest shampooing and conditioning your hair with warm water, thus allowing the products to work while lowering the risk of colour fade. Then, rinse with cold water to seal in your hair colour.

Make dry shampoo your new BFF

Washing brightly coloured hair every day is a big no-no. After all, every time you shampoo, you鈥檙e loosening the dye from your locks. Most hair colourists will tell you to only wash your hair two or three times a week.

In between washes, using dry shampoo can keep your hair looking clean, voluminous and grease-free. It鈥檚 truly the secret weapon in the fight against colour loss. But make sure that you pick a dry shampoo that鈥檚 safe for coloured hair!

When it comes to skincare advice, it鈥檚 often tricky to separate fact from fiction. After all, there鈥檚 so much misinformation floating around on the internet! Luckily, the cosmetology and medical aesthetics experts from 91自拍 are here to debunk prevalent skincare myths.

  1. Eating greasy foods causes acne

While greasy and fatty foods can have a host of negative effects on your body, there鈥檚 no scientific evidence suggesting that they鈥檙e to blame for your most recent breakout.

That being said, dairy is linked to acne flare-ups, especially around your chin and jawline. So, if you鈥檙e noticing more breakouts and inflammation in those areas, you might want to cut back.

  1. Makeup prematurely ages the skin

As any makeup artist will tell you, makeup doesn鈥檛 age your skin as long as you wash it off every night.

If you take the time to properly remove your makeup and follow the correct cleansing routine for your skin type, your skin will remain perfectly healthy. In fact, many modern makeup products are designed to help nourish, or even improve, your skin.

  1. Hot water is best for washing your face

Actually, lukewarm water is best. Using hot water to wash your face can dry out your skin and remove its protective moisture barrier.

To open your pores, you can gently steam them with a hot towel or by taking a shower. However, be careful not to directly expose your face to hot water for too long.

  1. People with naturally oily skin shouldn鈥檛 moisturize

Even if your skin is naturally on the oily side, you should use a quality moisturizer after washing your face. After all, most cleansers strip the natural oils from your skin, which need to be replenished afterwards.

To find the right moisturizer for your skin type, we recommend consulting with cosmetology professional.

  1. Exfoliating vigorously leads to the best results

When washing your face, gentler is almost always better. Exfoliating too vigorously or more than two to three times a week can strip your skin of its protective moisture barrier. This makes it vulnerable to clogged pores, excessive dryness and even premature wrinkling.

medical spa

When it comes to making sure your face and body look their best, professional cosmetology and medical aesthetics can make a big difference. The best place to get these treatments is at a medical spa, which offers typical day spa treatments as well as more advanced treatment options Here are just five of the many benefits of visiting a medical spa.

  1. Wider selection of treatments. Most medical spas offer more than the treatments you鈥檒l generally find at a traditional day spa. In addition to the facials and massages available, you can also enjoy treatments such as laser hair removal and microdermabrasion as well as injectables like Botox.

  1. Advanced technology. Top medical spas strive to stay on top of the latest offerings of medical aesthetics technology in order to offer the best treatments to their customers. This can include advanced lasers used to diminish wrinkles and scars and the top products for filling in fine lines.

  1. Professional expertise. While the people who work at a day spa usually have aesthetics training, the staff at a medical spa undergo additional extensive training in order to offer the latest and most effective treatments.

  1. It鈥檚 relaxing. It used to be that in order to get certain treatments such as laser therapy or Botox, you鈥檇 need to visit a doctor鈥檚 office. At a medical spa, you don鈥檛 have to wait in a clinical waiting room with other patients. In fact, a spa setting allows you tp feel pampered and relaxed from start to finish.

  1. You鈥檒l look and feel better. The treatments at a medical spa are designed to make your skin look and feel better. However, the benefits are more than skin deep. Looking your best is a boost to your self-esteem, so you鈥檒l feel better about yourself too. And combined with the relaxing experience provided by the medical spa, you鈥檒l also leave feeling less stressed and ready to take on the world.

Are you embarrassed by the spider veins on your nose and cheeks? If so, you might be comforted to know that you鈥檙e not alone. In fact, about half of all Canadians will develop vein issues at some point in their lives. They don鈥檛 usually pose a health risks, but visible marks on your face can be a blow to your confidence. Fortunately, there are now non-invasive methods to get rid of them.

What are facial spider veins?

Spider veins are actually damaged capillaries in the outermost layers of your skin. When they become dilated, they become visible. This can be caused by a number of factors, like genetics, sun damage, alcohol or the natural effects of aging. People with rosacea, a condition that causes the skin to be red and flushed, are also susceptible to spider veins.

Traditional treatments involve injecting saline solution into the veins with needles. Unfortunately, this leaves the patient bruised and sore for days. Luckily, treatments now exist that allow you to return to your normal life right away.

Laser therapy: a non-invasive spider vein treatment

Laser therapy is a great option for removing the small spider veins that can appear on the face. The treatment works by targeting the dark vein with a laser. This causes selective damage to the blood vessel without touching the surrounding cells.

Laser therapy not only removes the blood that causes the capillary to be visible, it also destroys the vessel. The capillary is then reabsorbed by your body and the flow of blood gets rerouted deeper under your skin.

Benefits of laser therapy to remove spider veins

Here are few reasons to choose laser treatments to get rid of your facial veins.

  • Lasers target more veins for removal at one time than other treatment This means you can expect a quick session with minimal discomfort.
  • There鈥檚 little risk of bruising and discolouration.
  • There鈥檚 o need for bandages or tape after your treatments.
  • Most people see fewer facial veins after their first treatment. They鈥檙e usually gone for good after two or three sessions.

Expert Tips from a Leading Esthetician School in Toronto

A homemade salve prepared to treat Windburns in Toronto

Windburn is one of those skin effects that no one thinks about, until you have it, of course. While there is little you can do to prevent your skin from peeling after a windburn, there are ways to help your skin heal faster. Also, keep in mind that there are treatment options to improve the look of your skin and might help prevent wind burnt skin in the future.

Also, be aware of how you get the wind burnt skin. While it naturally comes from the wind (hence the name), the cold temperatures, low humidity, and breezy conditions in combination cause the burning you see on your skin. All these factors deplete your skin of precious natural oils, leading to redness, dryness, irritation, and a nasty case of peeling.

Whether you caught a case of windburn after a day on the slopes, or just out-and-about on a typical Ontario windy day, there are ways to tackle the red blotches, peeling skin, and discomfort.

Here are a few useful tips from the experts at our leading esthetician school in Ontario:

  • Warm Up Your Skin – Windburn results from a combination of factors, but one important reason for drying out the face is cold temperatures. Restore your skin with a gentle, warm compress. Do not warm your skin by blowing hot air, because this irritates the skin further.
  • Moisturize, Moisturize, and Moisturize Again! 鈥 It sounds redundant, but for a good reason. Your wind burnt skin needs maximum moisture to recover. Apply aloe vera or another gentle, all-natural moisturizer to the skin. Do so often and be generous. Extra moisture helps the healing process, soothes the burn, and keeps peeling to a minimum. Your skin is dry and thirsty, so you must give it what it needs to rejuvenate.
  • Tend to the Peel – Skin peeling after windburn is common and unavoidable at times. Apply a super-hydrating facial cream that uses anti-inflammatory extracts. Cream prevents further peeling and cracking of the skin.
  • Cleanse the Skin – Use a glycerin-based cleanser without suds. Apply it to the affected areas to retain your skin鈥檚 natural oils. No matter what, do not pick at peeling skin.
  • Avoid Irritants – To keep your skin from turning into a rash-covered, swollen, peeling mess, avoid irritants until the skin heals thoroughly. Irritants include harsh chemical compounds, suds-producing cleansers, scrubs, and makeup.
  • Know When to Seek Professional Help – If the peeling and pain do not go away, or you notice signs of an infection (redness, swelling, or pus), and you have blisters; you must seek treatment right away.

Naturally, prevention is always the best cure. If you are outside on low-humidity, high-wind, and cold days, try to cover your face as much as possible. In addition to protection, to keep your face moisturized and establish a barrier.

Treat your skin and prevent environmental factors from disrupting your naturally beautiful skin. Consider taking a Skin Care Specialist course.

A Woman with Microbladed Eyebrows in Ontario

Microblading is the latest semi-permanent makeup technique for correcting thin eyebrows. Referred to as 鈥渁 work of art鈥 by those that practice it, microblading creates 3D fuller brows. Hair-like strokes are drawn onto the skin to mimic the natural hair strands. It is done by stroking pigment into your skin using a hand tool with multiple needles fused together in a linear grouping.

Why would one consider undergoing this type of cosmetic procedure? Microblading maintains the full and natural look of the eyebrows for up to 2 years. When done professionally, you need not worry about fading eyebrows every time you wash your face. Microblading is a non-invasive procedure approved by the FDA. It is painless and the initial procedure takes up to 2 hours. There is no downtime associated with this process; the patient only receives aftercare instructions. The pigment will soften to your color within 2-3 days after the procedure.

What Are the Effects of Microblading?

Here are some effects of microblading that may influence your decision about the procedure.

  • Allergies and Scarring 鈥 Some individuals may see this side effect if they react adversely to the ink used for the microblading procedure. A plant pigment can be used to make the right kind of ink for microblading, but some salons tend to use traditional tattoo ink which contains metals. In some instances, the ink also contains mercury which is dangerous when in contact with the skin. Using the wrong kind of ink can also lead to discoloration of the eyebrows.
  • Mismatching Strokes – The technique and ability of the artist performing the microblading procedure is just as important as the process itself. Sometimes the artist fails to map the strokes with the brows of the client, which leads to a criss-crossed fill of the brows. That is why it is recommended that microblading professionals should receive specialized medical aesthetic training from a renowned beauty college.
  • Skin sensitivity – Microblading can be ineffective when conducted on an oily skin. However, the use of plant pigments helps to reduce the sensitivity.

Although there are no major long-term effects of microblading, the procedure requires great care and professionalism. Be sure to check that the ink and the artistic technique meet the required standards.

Even with the high rate of success, you need to understand that the effects of microblading on one person鈥檚 brows may be different from another individual鈥檚 experience. It is important to seek professional advice from the best beauty schools in Ontario before trying it out on a client. Medical aesthetic training can provide you with the necessary skills to carry out microblading.

Become Medical Aesthetics expert by enrolling in medical aesthetic training courses at the 91自拍, one of the leading beauty colleges in Vaughan and Mississauga.

Woman admiring her Skin

Did you know the climate conditions of where you live can affect your skin? Depending on the weather, you may need to adjust your skin care treatments to protect against the elements. Similar to how you wear different clothing in different seasons, skin care products should also be switched up as the weather changes. Maybe you find that your skin tends to be oilier in the hot summer months and drier when the winter weather sets in. If so, it鈥檚 a good idea to avoid using a warm-weather moisturizer in the winter. Instead, opt for hydrating face creams to protect against dry skin. Essentially, your environmental conditions will tell you when it鈥檚 time to change your skin care routine.

Seasonal Skin Care Tips

As autumn approaches, consider transitioning to a cleansing oil, rather than a traditional face wash. This will help prepare your skin for the cooler, drier weather. In the winter, stick to using your cleansing oil, but change to a heavier moisturizer. In the spring, you will want to use a lotion that is ideal for sensitive skin, and for summer, keep it light with base products that provide exfoliation to rejuvenate your skin. These types of cleansers will help you remove all of the oils and sweat that build up over the summer months.

Autumn is the perfect opportunity for your skin to recover from the summer sun, chlorine and saltwater. Here鈥檚 what you should and shouldn鈥檛 do to keep your skin looking healthy and hydrated as we head into Fall:

顿辞鈥檚

  • Exfoliate and moisturize. Apply moisturizer following your bath or shower to help replenish the skin with water and essential oils.
  • Protect your lips against the sun鈥檚 UV rays to avoid dry, cracked lips in the winter.
  • As the air gets cooler, use cream instead of lotion. Creams provide more hydration and help prevent oily skin.
  • 顿辞苍鈥檛 forget to moisturize your hands. Dry and cracked hands during the winter are a common occurrence. By moisturizing your hands now, you can enjoy soft hands all winter long.

顿辞苍鈥檛

  • 顿辞苍鈥檛 be fooled by the cold weather and shorter days. Continue to wear sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays.
  • 顿辞苍鈥檛 use too much moisturizer. This can result in clogged pores and wasted product and money. Your skin can only absorb so much moisturizer.
  • 顿辞苍鈥檛 wait more than 60 seconds after cleansing to apply moisturizer.

Summer is finally here, which means it鈥檚 time to switch out your wardrobe! It also means keeping up with hair removal so you can wear that cute little white dress you have been waiting to put on or that fabulous A-line skirt you have had your eye on. Hair removal is one of those tasks that you may not enjoy doing, but it just needs to be done. Luckily, professional estheticians have the laser hair removal training to safely and effectively remove body hair so you can spend more time enjoying the warm weather and less time worrying about skin preparation.

Common Laser Hair Removal Mistakes to Avoid

If you are fed up with shaving or waxing and looking for a hair removal alternative, consider laser hair removal by a trained and certified esthetician. This procedure involves using high energy light beams of specific wavelengths through a laser, targeting the hair root and damaging the follicle to prevent growth. However, before taking this route, it鈥檚 important to review the following common laser hair removal misconceptions to ensure you are fully informed:

  • Believing it is permanent for all. Everyone鈥檚 hair follicles are different. Some are more stubborn than others and may never respond to laser treatment while others do not grow back at all just after a few sessions. It is, however, more realistic to expect a significant reduction in hair growth over time. For many individuals, it does turn out to be a permanent solution, but it鈥檚 best to be aware that it may not be that way for you.
  • Believing all hair responds the same way to laser treatment. Whether or not the treatment is successful depends on the melanin pigment in your hair follicles. Those with darker and thicker hair may see better results, as the follicles are able to absorb more energy from the laser.
  • Believing there will be no skin sensitivity. Even though the chances are slim, there is still the slightest possibility of skin damage or minimal scarring during treatment. It鈥檚 important to avoid tanning when receiving treatment to reduce the risk of burns and irritation.
  • Believing it is painless. Everyone鈥檚 pain threshold is different. For some, it may feel like they are being pinched during treatment. It is likely you may feel slight discomfort during the first session as there is a higher density of hair growth.
  • Believing laser hair removal can be done by anyone. Always trust a professional esthetician with laser hair removal training. He or she will have the skills required to effectively provide treatment and take all necessary steps to ensure it is done safely and accurately. For example, a professional will utilize the right laser to target the affected areas, use a topical anaesthetic or numbing cream in sensitive spots and provide you with proper eyewear to keep your eyes protected during treatment.
